Reading Goal #3 Completed

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

I have three things to say about Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.

  1. This one is my favorite book of his so far. Highlights include a Korean girl being stabbed in the eyelid with a pencil by her sadistic French teacher, living with a dog and acting like it’s your child, and Amy Sedaris, made up to look like she was severely beaten up, telling people she was finally in love.
  2. Among the big names listed in the “acclaim” section, like Wall Street Journal, New York Times Book Review, and Salon.com, my alma mater paper, Columbia Missourian is listed! I’m so proud of the paper that I fondly refer to as “the paper that made me vow to never ever not in a million years become a professional newspaper reporter”. Still, though. A small paper like that in the front of a David Sedaris book! I was so excited!
  3. I want to move back to Paris. A majority of the stories in this collection are about David and Hugh living in Normandy and Paris, and about him learning French. Oh how I miss Paris! Waking up to a big steaming bowl of cafe au lait and stale bread, taking the crowded metro to school, barely getting through my French politics class, drinking Yop!, a drinkable yogurt for lunch (I was broke), and shopping all afternoon at Zara (the reason I was broke), then having picnic dinners under the Tour Eiffle or at the Jardins du Luxembourg. Sigh. Thank you David for bringing back good memories.

If there is someone out there who has yet to enjoy the genius that is David Sedaris, I highly recommend you start with this collection of stories.

But…you don’t have to take my word for it.

Buh bum ching.

(What is it with all the Reading Rainbow references lately?)
