End of Year Lists: Books
Saturday, December 29th, 2007You can also look over to your right for the list of books I read in 2007, and which ones are on my shelf waiting to be read.
My top three books in 2007 are:
- The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri…I didn’t want this one to end! I would have read another 300 pages of the Gogol story. Rarely do I hope for sequels, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
- The Road by Cormac McCarthy…definitely the creepiest book of the year! I still shudder thinking about specific scenes. It’s also so fun to discuss - pessimistic view? Optimistic view? I love it!
- Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi…so eye opening and clever. It only took an hour to read, and I highly recommend it. We’ll be showing the film at the Moxie in February, so keep your eyes open for that.
The ones that I wasn’t too impressed with are:
- French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano…baloney! If only everyone could have champagne and fresh markets on a daily basis. Psh.
- The Number One Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith…cute, but too cute. I can’t quite see how there’s a whole series of these books! And a movie adaptation in the works.
- Atonement by Ian McEwan…I feel robbed. The plot and concept were clever (too clever? too meta?), but the writing and pace were, in my opinion, so slow. I almost want my time back so I could have squeezed in an extra couple books before the year ended! It will make a worthy discussion at our inaugural Finer Things Club, though, because I am alone in my feelings toward this book.
