That’s Tab-tastic

For some reason I have the hardest time finishing library books. Most likely it’s the pressure of completing a book before the ever-looming due date. By the time it has come and gone, and all my renewing privileges have ceased, I’ve only read 4 chapters. But being the book lover I am, I hate to send back an unfinished book.

So here’s what I’ve done to help me get through these books before the 1st due date. I’ve divided the book by how many days I want to read it in and put 3M tabs (or bookmarks) at each stopping point. For example, if a book is 400 pages long, and I want to read it in 12 days, I find a chapter break or good stopping point every 35 pages or so, and tab it.

See, I even took pictures!

Now the trick is actually meeting each day’s goal…and not being thought of as too big a nerd by the few faithful people that read my blog.

I’d never say you were *too* big a nerd…!

A nerd you may be, but since I see a Philip Pullman in those photos, all is forgiven. Being a nerd is cool, anyway. It’s all about the geek chic.

Also interesting to see that the first in the series has a different name in the States. Over hear it’s called ‘Northen Lights’.

Yes, Fyse, I finally was able to obtain a copy of The Golden Compass from the library. So far it’s pretty enjoyable!

I actually created an Excel spreadsheet to log my reading activity. It measures how many days I take to read a book, pages per day, etc. It keeps the pressure on to keep up with my reading. I find it really helpful. Let me know by e-amil and I will be happy to e-mail a copy.

How to finish library books on time

Blogger Nicole’s got a good system for pacing herself through library books to get them done in time for the due date: by dividing the book up into sections by the number of days each should take to read, and…

Excellent idea! I’m horrible at finishing books (A.D.D. maybe) so hopefully this technique will work.

Wow Luke - that’s pretty extensive! I’m impressed, and may have to take a look at that thing.

And so far the technique has worked! I finished my first book on time.

Such simplicity, yet ingenius in of itself!

I’ve practically stayed away from library books coz I was never able to finish them on time.

Think it might be a calling for me to return to the library now…

Post-It glue is acid and will leave marks on the paper that develop slowly over time. If your librarian catches you using them, s/he’ll break your thumbs.

  18. Nicole Says:

Uh-oh. If that’s the case, then I really better finish those books on time!

Nice, used to do the same when I was back in school… god, at one in the morning it was all I could do to make it to my next sticky note but it sure did help me pace myself through the readings!

How lame can you be?! Why not focus on reading instead of delaying the gratification by pasting stuff into your books? Pick up the book as a Mobipocket file for your Symbian telephone or your PDA, and the reading is much more delighful.
